New owners and possibly the effects of the A1M upgrade have brought a change of emphasis at the Nags Head. The gasto pub aspect has been replaced with a decent Chinese restaurant in the right hand end, while the posh lounge and public bar are food free. Beers on offer were from local boys Black Sheep and Pennine.

Visited 24 June 2011, when hunting for local pubs we look for quality food and the ability to cater for food intolerances and gluten free. Due to this we generally cannot drink most of the beer on offer anywhere. So our ratings will chiefly be about food, staff and ambiance. We also don't mind paying a bit extra for the quality food we are looking for. At the Nags Head we had excellent food, the woman who we took to be manager, explained all sauces and most other things could be adapted to be gluten free.. So big plus straight away. We had fillet steak (excellent) which was from locally sourced Hereford (mix) cattle and Mr wilkinsons herb fed free range chicken (delicious). The food was excellent.. A little pricey but we paid for quality and got quality. The staff were all wonderfully warm, helpful and very efficient and a credit to the place. The pub itself was nicely decorated and very neat and clean.. Lovely place and thoroughly recommended.

A Good Beer Guide regular not far from the currently being upgraded A1, half the pub is an upmarket restaurant with very good food; the other half the village pub. I suppose you could call it a gastro pub with a public bar, although good quality simpler pub food is also available. It labels itself a “residential country inn and restaurant” Products of both branches of the Theakston family are available but although not bad both the Black Sheep bitter and the Old Peculiar had little condition on my last visit. Decent range of Malts and especially wines as expected from this class of place.
