The Dabbling Duck is an attractive old building situated opposite the church and between two duck ponds in Great Massingham.
The emphasis is really on food, and it is decent, and rooms but don't be put off by the gastropub demeanour if all you want is a pint.
To the left as you enter is relatively small room with a large open fireplace to the left and the bar at the back. This is really where the drinkers assemble and there are bar stools around the bar to facilitate this.
To the right is the heart of the pub, a large room with fireplaces, bare brick walls, bookshelves, scrubbed tables, exposed beams and boarded floors. It's very nicely done and is a pleasant place to be but is used predominantly for dining in the evenings and breakfasts in the morning. There's a smaller, similarly done room seperated from this large area by the staircase up to the rooms.
To the back is a more recent addition, an extension used again for diners but again done well with wood floors, exposed beams and bookshelves. Beyond this is an attractive garden with plenty of seating.
Food is gastropub: freshly cooked with local ingredients. It's not cheap with starters around the £6 mark and mains up to £15 but what I had was very good represented decent value. If you're drinking wine then it's sold by the glass as well as the bottle and at equivalent prices so you're not forced to buy a whole bottle.
Beers on were GK IPA, Adnams Broadside, Elgoods Golden Newt and Beestons Worth the Wait. Not a stunning selection but not at all bad given that the focus is on food. I enjoyed the Worth the Wait and it was in good nick.
Service is attentive and friendly without being overbearing or obsequious.
This is nice pub in a lovely village and I'd happily return for a beer if passing.
