Now reopened after a refurbishment by new owners Brunning & Price. Internally much the same but with more tasteful decor and furniture. Decorated with flower prints, old maps, 18th century pictures and railway posters. The subjects are generally local and Nelson/Trafalgar related. Carpeted in the upper dining area and board floor elsewhere. The staff do pounce a bit but not quite in the “are you dining with us today” way, and otherwise the service is excellent. Six cask beers, no doubt some will be changing but the beer quality is very good. For the record the choice was Black Sheep Respire, Landlord, Northern Monk Eternal, Roosters YPA, Saltaire Triple Chocolate and a house badged bitter brewed by Brightside. Keg beers etc are also available.

Much extended from an old roadside house sitting end on to the busy Harrogate to Skipton A59, this is very much the modern eating pub decorated in an old style. An area to the right on entering, which is the remains of the old building, is laid out more for drinking but the remainder of the pub is all tables and chairs laid for dining. The old part has the screen and machine as well as a nice fireplace, casual drinkers would obviously choose this part of the pub. Flag floors with carpet, quarry tiles, bits of old rustic wood as partions and leather and wood furniture in bench, sofa, chair and stool forms provide the old style decoration. The obligatory old photos are there along with some caricatures, the horse brasses have been missed off the shopping list on this occasion. The two counter faces have 5 pulls in a bank of three and two, Leeds Pale and Gold plus Adnams Broadside, not bad but not outstanding quality. A small collection of clips shows guests from the bigger players, Marstons, Tetley, Deuchars and Taylors among them. Five lagers are also available.
The pub is disabled friendly although the doors are slightly narrow for easier wheel chair entry but it's all on one level apart from part of the eatery at the back and the disabled loo is on the same floor, the able bodied go downstairs. There's a patio area at the front but it's a bit close to the road, and a garden at the back with a reasonable view towards the Washburn Valley.

David Hurst left this review about The Nelson

Loved this pub; a smile and a hello as soon as I walked in - and they meant it as well! Was staying in the village of Hampsthwaite where there's no signal, so went in to use my laptop and have a lime and soda, but was treated as if I'd bought all the pub's food offerings. Definitely taking the family there for food next time we're in Hampsthwaite.
