An attractive barmaid and reasonable looking menu are the highlights here, as well as the proximity to the main navigable drain into Boston if boating. As we were the only customers and didn't eat, I can't comment on food quality other than to say that it is apparently popular with the golf club opposite. Much of the space is taken up with the dining room and adjoining bar.
Beers on were Brains Rev. James, Old Speckled Hen and Deuchars IPA. Deeply uninspiring.
Ocean Colour Scene on the stereo was worth an extra point from me but I don't think I'll be taking the chance that it's still playing again.

A large interwar years roadhouse,the interior has a classic 60's feel and is retro in a very good way.The pub is set above one of the Witham Navigable Drains which keeps the fens dry as well as safe from the North Sea and there are views of the only working lock on this system,sadly boat activity is rare apart from the intrepid.
From the front door there are two option ,the bar and the lounge/dining room.The bar has a pool table and many road signs on the wall as well as (daytime) TV,while the more interesting lounge has dark wood cladding,velour upholstery to the banquettes,half glass pane doors,brass fitments and several cartwheels are suspended from the ceiling not only here but throughout the substantial dining room which has large picture windows.As befits the name,there are photos of prize winning cattle and horns above the bar.An island bar serves both areas but the GBG listing failed to note that only three handpumps now operate with a very dull selection of national ale brands.Nothing wrong with the condition of my Deuchars IPA,it's just a poor beer.The pub was quiet but a squint at the menu revealed what sounded like substantial mains ,some priced quite high but also much cheaper bar meals alternatives,often sub £5.
With nothing much on the cook was chatting to the attractive barmaid,I would guess this is popular at weekends given the vast carpark to one side.Despite the old fashioned interior ,there was not enough to justify putting this on the list for a revisit.
