As it’s name suggests, this is not a pub in the conventional sense, but something of a cross between a gin bar and a vintage tea room. It’s not immediately obvious, with just a small doorway and a flight of stairs leading up to the pub. We were greeted by a waitress as we arrived and shown to a table where we perused a menu and she took our order which seems to be the norm here rather than ordering at the bar.
Décor wise it’s distinctly vintage with old wooden boards on the floor, retro wallpaper and pale green paintwork on the ceiling with ornate white cornice work. A piano was in one corner and young lady was playing the accordion in another. A small fireplace was off to one side with a wood burning stove and there were a collection of old tea pots on the mantelpiece above. A large table just inside the door housed piles of vintage crockery and there was a selection of cakes available. Large blackboards at one end of the room listed the available food options which were divided in to evening, day time, sandwiches and afternoon tea.
As might be expected, beer does not feature prominently here and there was nothing available on draught. The menu listed half a dozen or so bottles, some of which were quite local such as Truro and Penryn whilst others were distinctly less so, e.g.; Australia and Barbados. Ciders were also entirely bottled and included something from Jack’s Orchard in Kent as well as one from Normandy. Gins are clearly the main thing here though with over 100 to choose from, and the menu helpfully gave a brief description of each. Mrs B’s Monkey gin with strawberry and rose petals was well received, whilst I went for a “Vicar’s Tea Party” cocktail consisting of Hendricks, ginger and lemon which was served in a vintage tea cup. Had we both had the same, it would apparently have come in a vintage tea pot for us to pour. This is a tricky one to mark – I actually quite liked it for a change, but it’s clearly not the sort of place that’s going to appeal to the pub aficionado.
