The Village Inn was our first stop in Nailsworth. It is still home to Keep Brewing and their Heart of Gold was available. A guest ale was Hooky. No real cider was available.

The pub has a nice, plain interior. But a vigorous one-way system was in force. Even the locals seemed confused about how they should navigate around the pub.

I'd expected and hoped for more from this pub. But it didn't quite deliver.

Re-opened and reinvented in 2006 following a long period of closure, this pub has to be unique in so far that it is home to not one, but two breweries. The Nailsworth Brewery is located in the cellar and to the rear of the pub is the Hetty Pegler Brewery. Both micros make use of water from a natural spring running beneath the pub. Inside, eleven handpumps dispense the range across both breweries plus a couple of guests from Cottage and Stroud Brewery plus a cider, Black Rat at the time. The bar area is split level, its very hilly around here, and has several different areas. Wooden floors, lots of wood panelling, upholstered benches and stools at standard issue tables. The long main room is split into two areas, both served by the bar, there is a pool room at the rear and a separate larger side room where the decor includes framed prints of Hogarth's "Gin Lane" and "Beer Street". Outdoor drinking is in a rear courtyard.
The pub has a happy hour (actually three) Mon-Fri, 4-7, when there is 50p off a pint. There is also a loyalty card scheme where if you get a card stamped, after nine drinks your next one is free.
The more adventurous can take advantage of the chance to brew your own batch of beer to your specification at the Hetty Pegler brewery under the guidance of the brewer.
I thought that this was an excellent venture deserving support. Some of the brews are an acquired taste as there seems to be some experimentation going on, but the barstaff are fully clued up and happy to give guidance.

This is a brewpub, with the Nailsworth brewery downstairs, which supplies the pumps upstairs. The beer range and quality produced are excellent. It's a slightly unusual place upon entering as the interior appears to be very new but in a deliberately old-fashioned way; the small of new wood is almost overpowering. There's been an effort to make the inside late-1800's in character, lots of little alcoves, nooks and crannies, which is great and fits in well with the shell of the building, which must be 150 years old at least. I guess it needs to bed in a bit. The trio of female hostesses were friendly and kept pace with our busload of beer tourists well.

All in all, a nice place, with very local beer(!) and I'd recommend it straight away. Would expect it to improve further as the interior settles in.
