A substantial street corner pub in a residential area, although it was presumably built in the Victorian era, it has now been opened out in to one single, large U-shape room and although there are glimpses of it’s historic interior in places, it does feel somewhat more contemporary overall. Despite arriving soon after 6:00pm on a Thursday evening, it was already pretty much full to capacity, perhaps due to the steak deal that they run from 5:00pm. Fortunately we managed to squeeze on to the end of the one of the large bench tables.

As mentioned, the interior has been opened out and the walls and ceiling freshly plastered and painted white. Flooring though is perhaps more original with parquet wood flooring to one side and sanded wooden boards to the other, with chequered tiling opposite the entrance. Other hints of it’s former style included large leaded windows on two sides, quite a bit of stained glass in the entrance to the loos and a small fireplace with a glazed tile surround. Timberwork around the windows, porches and the panelling on the lower part of the walls had been painted dark green, although rough wooden boards entirely covering a couple of the smaller walls were something of a feature. An archway in one corner led to a brick wall containing a serving hatch for the kitchen. A couple of old leather sofas were in one of the bays, and that looked to be a cosy spot.

The menu offered a good selection of “pub grub” dishes such as ham egg & chips, beer battered haddock, rump steak, sausage & mash and so on as well as several choices of burgers and a number of number of trendy vegetarian dishes such as a beetroot and puy lentil bourguignon or a roasted parsnip gnocchi, with most options being somewhere around a tenner. My chicken, smoked bacon and tarragon pie was very good indeed, a generous portion and very tasty.

Beers on tap were 61 Deep and Sweet Chariot from Marstons, BBF Like a Stone and Butcombe Original. Ciders meanwhile were Reveller and Navel Gazer from Orchard Pig along with Thatcher’s Gold. All in all, I thought this was a pretty decent pub, although perhaps it doesn’t have quite the cosy old charm that it may have done at one time.

The Shakespeare is a large and decent looking pub that is on a side street just off Redland Road.
Once inside the pub has been opened out into a single room which is wrapped around the bar on three sides, which faces on entry.
There is a wood floor and the seating comfy bench seating and chairs to the front and normal tables and chairs elsewhere.
There four real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Bath Ales Jem,which was a very nice drink, the other real ales were Wadworth Dirty Rucker,Purity Mad Goose and Bristol Beer Factory Milk Stout.
Food was being served and quiet background music was playing.
I thought this was a very pleasant pub to have a drink in.

This is now part of the Royal Oak Horfield/Cross Hands Fishponds chain after a visit today since reopening. The place has been opened up and lost some of it's character since my last visit which I've enjoyed since my student days many moons ago. It is now essentially a large open plan area following the central bar around the building.

There were a number of real ales on but didn't notice real cider that is a feature of my local The Royal Oak. To the right on entry off the Woolcot Street entrance there is a partially exposed/open kitchen area with a feature brick wall. As per other pubs there is the inevitable green paint on lower paneled wall sections. Flooring and exposed tiles on entry remains intact from memory.

Despite losing some of it's character from the refurbishment I sense the new direction and food offerings will make it a very popular destination within Redland for locals and those that would ass some of the other delightful pubs in this suburb.
