After finding the Devonshire still closed after Covid on my last visit to Ulverston, I made it top of my priority list for a return trip to the town on a sunny winter's Friday afternoon.

Arriving at midday, I found the landlord tidying up his outdoor terrace in the hope that a few hardy souls might chose to brave the still fairly cold weather. Despite the sun shining, I chose to go inside to sup my beer.

The real ale range is currently reduced to two - Bowness Bay Swan Blonde & Logan Beck Navigator. Real cider is apparently available during the summer months.

The interior is nice enough, but lacked customers (and therefore atmosphere). Some kind of news channel was on the TV. The pub failed to live up to the lofty expectations I'd set it. I'd hoped it would be the best pub in Ulverston, but sadly there are several better ones elsewhere.

Original review (July 2020):

The Devonshire was the one pub in Ulverston that was still closed following the coronavirus lockdown on my Thursday evening visit. It was still closed when I went back on Friday evening. But apparently, it finally re-opened on Saturday.

At least I have an excuse to return to Ulverston some time.

This is a detached corner pub with patio area. The pub itself is quite plain, in a white and coffee two-tone scheme and modern windows. Saying that, the fact that there is a Romanesque window in the loft area gives the place the look of a former Methodist Chapel. The interior is now one irregular open-plan room; the former rooms having been ripped out. The decor has red and yellow walls, with some wood panel, wood floor and white ceiling. There is a pool table and a dart board in an area where lots of footy team names are painted on the wall. Maps, old photos and a few copy documents are on the walls for interes, along with an array of pump clips. Seating is a mix of perimeter, traditional stools and high chairs. There are several TVs showing sport at my visit. The service was fine and the place busy with what seemed a regular clientele. Beer; usual tap stuff with York Ghost Ale, Cumberland Corby Blonde, Saltaire IPA, Kelham Easy Rider and Cumbrian Loweswater Pale Ale. The Ghost was decent. A little modern for me, but still very much worth a visit - has the pub games and sport.

This pub is an easy walk down a side street from Ulverston station alongside the railway. It's a modernised interior but very much a friendly bustling locals pub with a pool table in one corner of the opened up rooms with a central bar area. The range of local and slightly further afield well kept ales makes this a must do pub when in town.
