This is a conversion of a former solicitor's office which makes it more pub like than the High Street shop or office conversions. It's situated on the cobbled Market Place and as JDWs go is probably best described as medium sized.
Inside it's split into various areas with some low beams and the bar situated at the rear left. There was a fair crowd in on my Thursday afternoon visit.
The bar has only eight hand pumps which had one unused, the two GK beers, Grafton Apricot Jungle, Firebrick Trade Star, Saltaire Cascadian Black, Spitfire and Nelson's Mutineer. I went for the Cascadian Black which was excellent.
Overall I thought this was a good Spoons.

Nice airy pub with bar to the left, darker rooms on the right and rear left, with an outside area to the far rear. Reasonable ale selection with Abbot and Daleside Monkey Wrench amongst the hand pumps.

Named after the thin half of Laurel (Jefferson) & Hardy who spent his childhood and theatre career in town where his father owned a mow demolished Theatre, this is quite a decent, rambling, multi room Wetherspoons and certainly a notch above your average JDW.

The main entrance leads to a lobby and then leads through to the main bar situated under a glazed roof in what would have the rear yard of the building. The opposite side of the pub is broken into 4 or 5 (I lost count) cosy interlocking rooms, all apart from one with a TV and each with a mix of quite homely furnishings. The front room has some fine panelling and bay window overlooking the market place. In the middle of the pub is a seemingly superflous passageway that acts like a wormhole from where you can disappear from the main bar and reappear near the entrance lobby bypassing anything else in the pub. The décor is quite pleasant although it was fully bedecked in World Cup bunting during my visit. Lots of interesting snippets around the pub naturally including young Laurel and of note to older sports fans will be the old photos of various Bishop Auckland football teams of years gone by when they were one of the country’s top amatuear sides. At the raer is a pleasant and quite spacious patio.

Sadly just the 2 guest ales on when I was there, Daleside Pride of Pendle and Houston’s Tartan Terror but it appears that there are usually 3 or 4 available and after a long day’s travelling, I was happy with whatever they could point in my direction.

For a Friday night, the customer base seemed quite sensible and quite mature although it wasn’t particularly busy even with the World Cup being screened. We returned the following morning for a decent breakfast as well.Overall, this is one of the better and more appealing ‘Spoons.
