Large multi -roomed Youngs pub with a central island bar, wooden floor, a mixture of high and low seating, dartboard, piped music, I imagine this was once a solid boozer but now opened out somewhat and smarted up has probably lost some character. Five handpumps with only two beers on the go post lockdown. Twickenham Grandstand and Youngs Ordinary, the latter was as expected in this day and age, bland and unchallenging but welcome all the same on a hot day. The pub was decent enough and worth a pint in if nearby.

Young’s Bitter (£3.35 a pint), Young’s Special and Twickenham London Gold on. This is essentially a three room – or rather a three area – pub. The room as you enter just has a handful of barrels combined with tall stools, so nowhere there that I’m going to sit. The room on the right is rather nice though, with three quarter height fielded panelling on the walls, some very nice wooden tables coupled with normal chairs, as well as a marble fireplace. I’m sure that this room is normally reserved for diners judging by the little “bookings” terminal on a small table by the entrance, but as the kitchen was closed for some work to be undertaken this room was available for those just wanting a drink, like me. There are some old black and white photographs on the walls in here. There is a third room behind the servery with a raised area leading out to the garden, but there was some work going on in here as well so I couldn’t get a good look.
This pub’s OK, but it does have a fair number of the Young’s makeover touches about it such as the large jars of nuts and the like in niches set in the bar back. I wouldn’t mind visiting again sometime, and the presence of a Twickenham ale is a definite plus.

The central island bar serves what is now effectively one largish space, although with a hint of seperation. I remember formerly there was a seperate side room away from the bar, this is now set for formal dining, but gladly the original fireplace remains.
Plenty survives of the old pub, the wood panelling is worthy of note as is the decorative archwork over the openings. The rooflights also remain lighting the rear room/bar area.
Generally traditional seating at old scrubbed tables, but the rear raised area has a run of sofa style benches with big cushions around the end corner. Decor is nicely understated, suiting the ambience, and includes old London Transport ads, mostly related to Surbiton and Kingston.
The garden area at the back looks very recent and is attractive with covered areas and unusually a large rabbit run.
This is a Young's house, well kept beer, with the usual range but also adding Hook Norton Old Hooky as a guest.
I still like the pub despite the changes, much better than the brewery have done in some others.
