This is much more publike than the Pennington, which is apparently in the same ownership; it's much more down to earth, and needs a name to reflect this. Holly House Hotel, its former name, makes you think of a guest house, while no one ever got rich naming a pub "Inn at Somewhere-or-other". Ravenglass used to have at least two other pubs: The Ship and the Bay Horse. I read (on the website of the Bay Horse B&B) about a smugglers tunnel between the old pubs: no one would dig a tunnel to or from the Inn at Somewhere-or-other.

Anyway, five mostly local ales were available at the time of our visit, and at least one cider (in a boxed polypin). I made a mistake and went for the Hesket Newmarket Skiddaw, which was on its last legs (it was being sold at £2.60 to get rid before it went off, but unfortunately slightly too late). Should have gone for the Moorhouses Black Cat or Hawkshead Bitter (see photos for complete beer list at time of visit).

The atmosphere was friendly - too friendly! Even though we went and sat outside I couldn't shake off the man who was convinced you could get a stronger beer just by carrying on brewing - I must have explained six or seven times that you can only get out what you put in and that you'll never make an 8% beer if you add 40 grams of fermentables per litre of water. If only! Despite the odd fly in the ointment, we enjoyed our time here waiting for the train to Eskdale, which I can also heartily recommend. I can imagine that this would be a good place to stay off-season. Or the first (or last) stop on a pub crawl by train around the coast to Lancaster!

Looks a bit like a guest house, but actually has a rather nice bar, with a lower stone floored area and a more comfortable area up a couple of steps. A good selection of local ales, which seemed well kept, and food sounded like good value pub grub, although not sampled. Probably overlooked by most visitors to the nearly narrow gauge railway, but well worth a try.

I agree with the positive comments made by Graham below. Inside there is a comfortable bar with 5 real ales, which turn over quickly and are always on good form. The accommodation is reasonably priced and the food looked to be very nice and was certainly well appreciated by the customers. A great place to stop if you are in the area as you can sit with a great pint and look out over the estuary. The landlord is very welcoming as so are the locals
