Our destination and home for day 4 of the Inn Way.

Top food - huge portions.

Great beer - I went Copper Dragon.

Lovely people - real community feel and we were made to feel most welcome.

A small, traditional one room pub, nestled amongst rows of cottages, in a very picturesque village. The interior is surprisingly basic (plain white walls and benches) given the upmarket feel of the area, but rather that than one stripped out and given the dreaded designer makeover by numbers.

At the bar there were four wickets, with three in use, serving John Smiths Cask, Black Sheep ‘Velo’, and Copper Dragon ‘Hill Hammer’. Trying the latter two, they were both in decent nick, as you’d expect from a GBG listed pub, however, neither set the pulse racing. Service from the young barman, a member of the tribe known as ‘Dales hipster’, was perfunctory, at best.

There’s a dartboard to the rear and a separate dining room, to the left, on entering. Apparently, the pub has its own pizza oven on the premises and is known as a takeaway locally, tapping into the cottage based tourist market. Picnic tables, in front of the pub, give fine views over the village green to the escarpment beyond, leading to West Witton Moor.

Although not entirely convinced by the place, overall, on this first visit, I’m sure we’ll call again, at some stage, if only to enjoy the particularly fine setting.
