It was quite late when we called in here and it was quite busy. Had a quick half of Caledonian Whelan's and moved on.

Now re-opened as Whelan's, an Irish-themed bar in early 2017, this has a smart, yet cosy enough interior with a bar centre-left (which faces the entrance, rather than being up against the left-hand wall). Flooring is a mixture of bare dark boards and coloured tiles, seating a variety of long, standard-height tables and wooden chairs, raised tables and chairs, armchair seats and a red leather sofa against one of the front windows. Red raised booth seating is located opposite the bar against the right-hand wall, next to a door through to an enclosed patio, with a raised area up a few steps at the rear of the room beyond the bar. Old porcelain bottles adorn the front windows, side window sills and glass cabinets and 5-cent coins are glued to the two centre pillars, several screens adorn the walls showing various sports. Two ales offered: London Pride and something called Whelan's House Ale. I passed, and had a pint of Diet Coke which stung me for £3.35. Early 2000s muzak and youthful clientele means this probably isn't a destination venue in Uxbridge, but the interior is pleasant, and if you're crawling, this is worth ticking early doors.

Steve C left this review about The Crown and Sceptre

I was the only customer in this large open plan pub during my early Saturday evening visit, but the dance music and CCTV cameras and signs all over the pub lead me to believe that this is more of a late night dance venue for the younger inhabitants of Uxbridge. There were two barmaids on duty that seemed friendly enough and I was surprised to see Directors, Courage Best and Pride on hand pumps alongside a standard and premium draught selection and I enjoyed a well poured pint of Guinness.

There seemed to be a restaurant type area at the rear and there was a gastro feel, but I think that the main money is made from weekend nights when the DJ booth is operational and the expensive bottles of pop are being purchased from the bar.

The toilets are upstairs and after using them I spotted signs stating that there were no hand washing facilities due to vandals. I would have thought that a pub should have this basic requirement before opening up for the day. Thankfully as I was the only customer I was able to pop into the ladies, but I wouldn’t want to know what bugs had been spread all over the pub by midnight.

I’m not really into these pubs anymore, but I would have probably been a regular if this place was around fifteen years ago when I used to visit this area with the lads.
