A family-run pub with a building adjacent to its car park that is used for bunk barn or hostel accommodation. Handily placed for the railway, it would make a good base for a coastal holiday. I called in at the end of a day of drinking in pubs close to the track, and I have to say that this one suffers in comparison to the likes of the Brown Cow in Dalton, the Manor Arms in Broughton and the Prince of Wales at Foxfield. Having said that, the Ship gives the impression of the sort of cosy pub that could grow on you over a period of a few days if staying in the village. There were two hand pumps (out of four) on the go when I was here midweek - perhaps there is more choice at weekends? Available beers were Langdale Tup and Town House Centennial. Not being a fan of Amercian hops, I went for the Tup, which was from the Thwaites craft brewery, and to be honest was not in very good condition - as the pub is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and I was here on a Wednesday, I would have hoped for fresh beer.

This is a village local, with a games room to the rear (pool, darts and TV) and a DJ console visible to the left of the bar, which may or may not be good news to potential guests. I'm not sure that a small village like this can sustain two pubs (the Burlington up the hill has Timothy Taylor beers on tap).
