Update: As it was, a fantastic pub, only as the previous reviewer notes there are 6 ales on now (which i may have missed last time) Enville Ale and Ginger, Hobson's Town Crier and 3 I had never seen and of which the Cheddar Old Gorge was very good. A great place.

July 2013: This is a detached pub and restaurant, with patio and a beer garden. Its irregular nature gives it a look like a Georgian/Victorian farm that has organically grown into a pub (inn). It is, in essence, two cottage, side-by-side, with one extending at the front. It is in white render, with coffee chimney and porch. The pub has two rooms, served by a central bar. The one to the right is called the Stable Snug, and is on two levels. It is in fact more of a dining area, with old pictures on the walls, and bits of ephemera including a stuffed bird in flying pose! It is in wood, cream and dark brown. The bar has a red tile floor, and is in red and white, with an imposing brick fireplace. A plethora of jugs and bottles, along with old pictures give it a traditional feel - especially as it has exposed beams. There is no TV that i saw, and no music was playing. The service was really friendly, clearly the gaffer saw this as a labour of love. The clientele was mixed and mainly dining. Beer; usual tap stuff with Hobson's Town Crier, Millhouse True Grit and a decent Holden's Golden Glow. A great experience; a place i could stay for ages in - and would like to try the food. Definitely worth a visit.

Been to The Old Gate now many times, a few changes recently has seen an internal paint and the 6 handpulls, instead of serving the same 3 beers either side of the bar, are now all different so 6 ales on.
The ales are always in tip top condition and at least 3 vary, as soon as the barrel is empty another guest goes on - even though this is a traditional Freehouse. The regular beers are what the regulars drink.
Food, as always is exceptional with meat and veg sourced locally from small producers leading to some excellent meals from the varying menu and specials board.
Accommodation is warm and cosy but with only 2 rooms it is worth calling ahead to make sure that a room is available.
Although Heathton is out of the way and the pub serves only a small village it is always popular with the locals and is very warm and welcoming and definitely worth getting lost on country lanes to find it!

Country pub, in a small hamlet. 3 real ales, good food and a friendly atmosphere. Well worth a visit.
