A large modern Spoons with 'trendy architect' written all over it. The historic club building at one side (containing the bar) has been overwhelmed by a massive extension with glass elevations and other ghastly features, quite out of place in the old street. There is a little patio area to the rear (bizarrely, at one point it was raining here but not the other side of the building!). Guest ales on were Enefield EB and London IPA, plus a couple of specials from the autumn festival. Aside from the architecture, entirely predictable.

This is an odd Spoons as it seems to be an attractive old building with a hideous modern thing bolted on to it. Inside it's about as exciting as watching recordings of old party political broadcasts, probably partly because I missed the area housed in the old building. It's completely open plan with mostly low tables and chairs and a fairly low ceiling due to there being an upstairs area that I didn't bother to look at.
On the bar there were two banks of five hand pumps with a fairly indifferent beer selection but I have seen worse. Both GK beers were doubled up and then there was a cider, Adnam's Broadside, Deuchar's IPA, Stonehenge Rudolph, Titanic Festive Thirty Five and Red Squirrel Milk Stout.
I went for the Titanic Festive 35 (£2.45) which was in reasonable nick but hazy. I subsequently had a perfect pint of this in a GBG listed Spoons that had sparkling clarity.
On my pre-noon visit this place was well busy with mostly older shoppers and families and the breakfast I had was fine.
I bet McMullen wish they had a pub as busy as this in their home town.

This is another fairly recent Wetherspoons build being originally opened in March 2008. The pub takes its name from the six Knights Templar, who owned several houses in Hertfordshire and were arrested in Dinsley, near Hitchin when the order was suppressed, in 1307.
Wetherspoons outlets are well known to polarise opinion and this one certainly did between the better half and me, in that she liked the large internal open light space with the large glass frontage, whereas I thought it was a crap use of an old historical building, with all the atmosphere of an airport departure lounge and that turret thing stuck on the front is just a large carbuncle.
Perhaps my view was clouded by the beer I was served which also was not particularly good, but there were plenty of people in on this late Saturday afternoon enjoying the beer and the food, so what do I know.
