set in the old conservation area, this is/was one of the oldest pubs in Kendal and one of the few genuinely unspoilt traditional ones. it's now closed I think and there is a planning application to convert it to flats. depressing.

With its Jennings signage, I was hoping for something good at the Black Swan, or at least some Jennings beers. However, the two beers on at the time of my visit were Ringwood Boondoggle and Merrie City Crystal Gold brewed by Clarks of Westgate in Wakefield - what's that doing here? This is a lovely pub, both inside and out: there's wood panelling and traditional tiling, carpets and décor. On the other hand there's also live sports on TV. A different style of fireplace in each part of the single room hints at a previous arrangement of the walls, though there is still the semblance of a snug at one side. This is a comfortable pub which would be much improved by the availability of some good local ale.

A small pub owned by the Jennings brewery. the pub sells bar snacks and has a good range of Jennings cask beers.
