A friendly traditional pub towards the outskirts of Nailsea, but nonetheless a relatively short stroll from the central area. Having been through a few changes of landlords and spells of closure a few years back, it now seems to be on a firmer footing and various community events are held here.

The majority of the pub is one good sized room with a wooden partition running down the middle. There is also a small snug off to the left. It’s got a traditional, if perhaps slightly dated, pub feel to the place, with carpeted flooring, dark wood cladding on the lower part of the walls and some exposed stonework elsewhere. Blue bench seating is around the perimeter, with conventional tables and chairs elsewhere. There was a plasma screen in the corner near the bar that was showing the football which was perhaps a little intrusive, but it could have been a lot worse.

There is a beer garden at the back with a patio area, covered smoking house and a decent looking kid’s play area with wooden climbing frames, a slider and a rope slide. There is also a piquant pitch at the back, and the pub has in the past fielded a couple of teams, although whether they are still running I’m not sure. A basic pub grub menu is offered.

Beers on tap were Doom Bar, London Pride, Butcombe and the seasonal Rockin’ Rudolph. Ciders were well represented with Thatcher’s Gold, Thatcher’s Heritage and Stowford Press on tap on the bar along with Old Rosie, Rosie’s Pig and Nailsea Cider served from boxes racked up in the next room. The latter is a new one on me and the friendly landlord informed me it’s made in small batches from apples collected within the local area. All in all one of the better pubs in Nailsea, and well worth a visit.
