The Green Man is a roadside pub/ restaurant situated in the amusingly named small Cambridgeshire Hamlet of Six Mile Bottom, just off the A11 on the A1304 Newmarket Road.
Although it still has the look of a traditional pub it functions more as a steak restaurant and is also renowned for its game, primarily because it is managed by a local game keeper who also runs regular shoots in the surrounding Cambridgeshire countryside starting from the function room in the pub.
From the outside you get a clue of the character from the pub sign and the large mural of gamekeeper with his gundog on the end wall of the pub. But it is not till you enter that you experience the full hunting effect. Let’s just say that this venue is not one for the vegetarian.
Internally the traditional Oak beamed interior has been retained and there is a bar section with large fireplace and comfortable chesterfield sofas and large oak tables. And here, as well as having a history of Six Mile Bottom and local game keeping, you will share your experience with stuffed animals and mounted beast heads of all types. This continues throughout the rest of the pub, including the majority of the space set up for dining and the additional sports bar section at the back of the pub. And for the surfaces that do not have an owl, rabbit, ferret, game bird or head of a stag, then there is a picture or photograph of some hunting scene or game animal of some description. The only exception is the “Weighing Room” function room which, although being used for the shoot days, has a more Horse racing theme as it is utilised for function days by the racecourse.
If the dead animal décor wasn’t quirky enough, the start of the dining section has a large black cast iron safe as an ornament and the sports bar section has a film memorabilia section devoted to Vinnie Jones. But for me the most quirky thing was that the bar supports two hand pumps and, although the pub is apparently a Free House, it takes its beers from Green King.
Now, granted the pint of IPA I had was very good, but for a Free House to take its beers from the same brewery that dominates nearly every other pub in the area makes no sense to me……
…… unless the punters that visit The Green Man have no interest in beer and GK is therefore an easy option as they deliver in the area, and there you have it.
Nearly every customer comes here to eat and mostly the steaks, which vary from 8oz to 32oz options of all the popular cuts. And as a Cambridgeshire version of Man V Food, there is an eating challenge in the shape of a 72oz rump steak which comes with onion rings, mushrooms, tomatoes, peas and chips and if you can eat it all within one hour then you win the challenge and don’t pay the £60 price.
I decided to go for a wimps 10oz Sirloin and I have to say it was rather special, well certainly special compared to an Angus steak house. Although still technically a pub, I would only recommend a visit here if you are a meat eater with a big appetite and for that you are better off inspecting the Trip Advisor ratings page rather than this pub review site.
