The Royal oak is a charming looking pub situated at the western end of what must be the largest and longest village green of any village in England.
The central pub room which houses the bar dates back to the 1500’s, but the building has been much extended over recent years by the addition of a back section and large conservatory. Not much changed from the previous review except for the fact that the new owners who took over the pub a couple of years ago have smartened up the dining section accessed through the low five foot high opening to the left of the bar by painting it largely white and adding a solid oak floor throughout, and upped the quality of the food menu so that it is now becoming renowned locally for that.
I have primarily visited for the restaurant section over the last year since we were let back out , but the new owners still retain four real ales on the bar and although these tend to be from the GK stable with IPA , OSH and one called Toadrage, there has always been a very passable Adnams Ghostship on the fourth pump.
If you are coming here just for a beer then that is best done on a balmy summers evening when the grass section in front of the pub becomes a massive pub garden and it really is a great spot for an alfresco pint.
The pub is not open on Mondays and shuts after the lunch service for a few hours until evening.

A charming timber-framed pub in this verdant Cambridgeshire village - all the houses are set back from the road with wide grass verges in front. This was probably a two-roomer once upon a time - upon entering you can go through a door on the right marked Bar or left marked Oak Room and Restaurant but once through it has been opened up with a just over five foot high opening betwixt the two. Exposed beams and brick with some rendering in between, this has red and black quarry tiles in the bar area and offered a slightly bland four ale line-up of GK IPA, Fuller's London Pride, Brains Rev James and Adnam's Ghost Ship. The latter was £3.90 for a pint's worth and in super shape. I wanted to like this pub more - the setting is superb and it looks the business inside - but a couple of sweary locals watching a PL game and slurring their words talking about their betting accounts kind of dented the ambience.
