This is a small, traditional old pub on the main road uphill from Northwich which once would have been the road to Chester before the busy A56 by-pass was built. I doubt they get much passing trade these days but I received a friendly welcome from the landlord and lady, the latter on noticing me looking around and taking an interest advised me that this is now the smallest pub in Northwich. I don't doubt that, three very small semi-separated areas, from the dividing line and the change of flooring with just the angular side area away from the bar carpeted, almost certainly once a lounge and vault layout. There is a distinct late 70s, early 80s feel, nostalgia for me as they were my inaugural pub going years, the old Wilson's Brewery signage remains outside to this day, inside there are white painted roughcast walls and matchboarding. Banquette seating to the external room edges plus chairs and small stools.
Décor included team pictures of local football sides Witton Albion and the original pre-meltdown Northwich Victoria as well as the Manchester clubs, framed prints of ships and a lovely set of drawings and photos of now long gone local pubs. There is a TV, I believe sports are shown, elsewhere there are suggestions of pool and darts however I saw no signs unless I missed another small room.
Just the one handpump now, the landlord said he once ran with three but couldn't sustain that now, shame but good business sense to keep one in good nick. Storm Brewery Bosley Cloud it was, and in good nick it was too. Clips on the end of the bar indicate the choice varies. I liked it here, a no frills old school boozer, struggling through but managing too. I would certainly drop in for one again when trudging back uphill from the town centre while visiting my parents.
