A sign outside the Bowling Green boasts that it has been around since 1650, I have no reason to doubt this. The dimly lit aged wooden interior is made up of several different seating areas on parquet, tiles and floorboards. To the left of the entrance is a small room with a pool table and to the right is a seating area with dartboard to the front and a bar to the rear with a counter up the left that faces seating to the right. The bar is stocked with premium keg and three hand pumps were in operation drawing Titanic Plum Porter, TT Landlord and Bass. I was informed that the Porter was off, so I went for half a Bass that was served in one of those short and wide Beavertown glasses. This visit was late afternoon when the barman and the governor were the only people in attendance. The strong smell of fags, and one of the Creed boxing films on the television gave me the impression that people don’t usually visit here late on a Tuesday afternoon. On my return to the pub about five hours later the governor was still sat in the same seat at the bar, but there was a quiz in progress with teams sitting mainly in the rear seating area. The Bass has gone off during my absence, so I ended up with half an overpriced lager. I thought this pub had seen better days.

Large and historic old pub with lots of aged woodwork, rather opened out but retaining some separate areas including an interesting glass-walled meeting room. Very quiet on a midweek afternoon but still offering food. Beers were from a mixture of local and national breweries: I tried Mobberley Concept which was very pleasant (Cask Marque listing). Sadly the eponymous bowling green lies under the rear extension.

Certainly the oldest surviving pub in Northwich dating from the 17th century the black and white timbered construction are consistent with Cheshire buildings of age. Multiple rooms inside, the front room is flagged with the bar ahead, wood panelling, wood burning stove, TV showing rugby, through a side corridor you pass a snug with wall mounted maps including the Cheshire Ring canal, good fire going in here too.
Beyond is a much bigger room, split again with a rear dining area and another side bit with garden access. This pub looks to have been added to over the years and is now huge but in keeping with the separate areas maintained.
The beer pumps are split between the front and rear main bars, I encountered Canterbury Green Stout, Tatton Brewery Gold and Merlin Castle Black. Note the pumps are split between rooms.
A lovely convivial pub, as far as I can make out and easily the best on offer in Northwich.
