An old fashioned roadside pub of the farmhouse type, which has been in the same family for over 30 years. I have been past it more times than I have been in, I reckon, as it has limited weekday afternoon opening (12 to 2 according to their website, but not between November and Easter). Having not been here for many years I decided to make a special trip from my campsite near Settle, a 16 mile bike ride through intermittent drizzly rain, arriving at exactly two minutes before noon. I was glad to see a fire in the grate to the left on entering (there's another on the right which was not in use), though the landlady said that putting my jacket in front of it to dry would be a fire hazard. (She then kindly pointed out that there was a radiator on at the other end of the room.) The bar, wood panelled and copper topped, is immediately facing on entry, with an open-plan room around it, and a small dining room to the left. There are two hand pumps, with Pennine Natural Gold and Wensleydale Falconer on at the time of my visit. My pint of the latter was in very good condition and I enjoyed my stay here before venturing out into that rain. The landlady became chatty and entertained me with stories of rain and hail storms, and the difficulty in getting reasonable insurance quotes because the river is just the other side of the road but the assessors don't appreciate that it is so far below that it would never get anywhere near the pub unless there's a rerun of Noah's Flood.
