Called in again with a few minutes to spare before my train on the Settle-Carlisle line, and stopped for a beer this time, though only Bombardier was available among the three hand pumps on the bar - maybe they have more/different beers on at the weekends? If so, there is no display of former pump clips to confirm it. This is a nice little market square pub, in a very pleasant market town. The pub has a narrow frontage, and goes back a long way to make up for this, with a raised section to the rear. There are bare boards on the floor, basic pub tables and chairs and a bar counter of stripped pine. Nothing out of the ordinary, but a pleasant spot for a swift half. I can't help thinking it would be so much better with a local beer or two on the bar, but I'm not holding my breath.

This is a nice looking building and we popped our heads round the door to see what real ales were on - only Fullers London Pride, so we quickly moved on. I know some people swear by this beer, but it always seems bland to me. There's Appleby Brewery a few miles outside town: why don't they try serving some of their beers here?
