A traditional stone built pub located in a very attractive spot alongside the river. It’s a little off the beaten track, but is only a short drive from the A39 and is well worth making a detour to find. Besides the pub, there is a small terrace or patio next to the river and this was a very pleasant spot with lovely views along the valley. The sign outside describes it as a pub and brewery, although whether that’s still the case I’m not sure. There was no obvious sign of their own beer.

Internally it’s quite traditional and consists of one room along the front with a further one up a couple of steps at the rear, although this was itself divided in to two by some black wooden balustrade. There were lots of black beams on the ceiling and these had a selection of beer mats affixed to them although not as extensive a selection as in some pubs. There was also a large selection of Toby jugs, both behind the bar counter and on shelves around the pub. A stone fireplace at the front housed a wood burning stove, whilst there was another free standing stove at the rear. Various farm implements were on the walls, as well as horse brasses and lots of photos of the local area and drawings of the pub. The lower part of the pub had pale yellow paintwork on the walls, with wood panelling on the lower part. Numerous Union Jack cushions were arranged on the seating.

Initial thoughts were that there were no real ales on, as neither of the two hand pumps on the bar appeared to be in use. Closer inspection though revealed a row of four barrels racked up on stillage behind the bar, although as far as I could make out the only available choice was Exmoor Fox. Ciders meanwhile were Thatcher’s Gold and Thatcher’s Haze. All in all, well worth a visit.

This pub has recently been taken over by Cathryn and Sarah. It has changed beyond belief now. It is a great spot and the welcome is great. Lovely log fire, big portions of delicious food. Soon to have en suites in most rooms. It is cosy and friendly and well worth a visit for a beer a meal or weekend break. The area is beautiful at any time of year and there is a level riverside walk across the road from the pub. If you use to use it and havent done lately - come back and try it now.
