Still much as described by Old Blue, below, we found this traditional village pub to be friendly, welcoming and comfortable. The landlord made us feel at home, while many of the locals took the time to come and speak to us. Half the bar was occupied by what looked like an escape committee from Derby and Joan, while the other half was busy with regulars and members of a local shoot. The food smelled great and was good value. Still a Palmer's pub, so the ale choice was restricted to IPA, Copper and Gold, and these were in perfect condition. Keg choices were Dorset Pale, Guinness, Amstel and Orchard Haze cider. A really enjoyable experience, and it was worth the trek to find it.

Welcoming Palmer's pub in the village of Uploders.

Just a couple of other customers were present throughout our visit. But the welcome couldn't have been much warmer from the landlord.

Beers on were IPA, Copper & 200. Note the pub shuts during the afternoon every day and is closed all day Monday.

This small, oak beamed village pub consists of a single main room, which has been extended by a second room down some steps to the right and known as ‘Downloders’. The ceiling and walls sport a wide range of curios, from nautical and military hats to agricultural tools, hunting horns and old model cars. There is a pot of walking sticks inside the front door, made by a local craftsman and on sale for around £10-20, and a harpsichord or suchlike towards the rear, which apparently someone used to play.

I have been here several times and always found it very welcoming. A Palmers’ house serving Copper Ale and Best (a good pint at £3.20) from its two ale pumps, it has a deservedly busy food trade but retains some stools at its small bar and is still a comfortable place to come for a drink. The landlord Ralph (who correctly pronounces his name ‘Rafe’) is quite a character. It is advisable to book a table if eating, and to ask for one in the main bar which is far more interesting and comfortable than the ‘Downloders’ room.

I like this pub and will come here again to drink and/or eat.
