A traditional looking pub brick built at the top of Windmill Hill, it looks quite enticing from the outside with it’s ornate windows on the upper floor and etched glass downstairs displaying the pub’s name. It was very quiet on a recent Thursday evening visit with only a couple of other punters in there initially, although a ladies darts team did turn up later.

Inside though, it’s something of a disappointment. It’s essentially one large, open plan, featureless room that looks very tired and dated and has nothing in the way of any distinguishing features. Plain wooden boards are at the front of the pub whilst some old carpet is at the rear, along with a pool table and a fire-place that had a picture of a fire stuck to the front of it. The windows in the doors had grills over them and there were plenty of signs saying that drug taking would not be tolerated. A projector screen was on one wall, but the projector itself had been removed, although a plasma screen was showing a terrestrial TV channel. The only items that may be of interest were a number of items of Bristol City Football Club memorabilia such as shirts and scarves pinned to the walls. A rather annoying dog was running around yapping and jumping up at people.

Unfortunately there were no real ales on tap, just keg John Smiths. Ciders were Blackthorn and Thatcher’s Gold.

Great little boozer, one of the few in the area that has not been gentrified, no food no coffee, beer, a great juke box, music on a monthly basis, friendly staff and customers
and reasonable prices, give it a try!
