An attractive stone built pub in this small village located just off the A417, it consists of both a pub and adjacent hotel and there is also a good sized beer garden and car park. Despite the attractive looking building though, alarm bells did start to ring when I saw the Greene King branding on the outside.

Internally it’s a quite expansive, multi-roomed layout, although it has been opened out to some extent and all rooms flow in to one another. Décor wise it’s unfortunately all very bland and corporate which is rather disappointing. Flooring is predominantly carpet with some slate style tiling near the rear entrance and some wood strip at the front, whilst the paintwork was cream on the upper part if the walls and either khaki green or contrasting purple on the lower part. It looks as though the pub may have been extended at one time, with what looks to be some exterior stone walling including windows being something of a feature in the middle of the pub, and whilst there were plenty of beams on the ceiling, these looked to be very much of the modern variety. A couple of snug areas off to the side included low leather sofas, and a couple of TV screens were showing a sports channel, although the volume was off so this was not too intrusive. Food is clearly a major focus here, with all tables being laid up with menus, cutlery and condiments.

Beers on tap were Greene King IPA, Abbott Ale, Old Hooky and Clavell and Hind’s Coachman. Ciders meanwhile were Stowford Press and Thatcher’s Gold. Overall, I thought this was quite disappointing, with an interior far more befitting a Premier Inn than an old Cotswold pub.

A largish Cotswold stone building located in Birdlip village just off the A417, this functioning hotel has a large bar and dining area which is located to the left of its Reception. Under Greene King's auspices, this seems to have some of the trappings of its chain eateries, albeit with a little more sympathy to the building's internal layout, with an undulating bar, flagstone bar apron and Wetherspoons-style carpet and sunken area and partial function room to the left. Ale options consisted of GK IPA, Abbot Ale, Hook Norton Old Hooky and Cotswold Lion Best in Show, which, at the strange price of £3.54 for a pint, was in surprisingly fresh condition. There were a fair few in too, both imbibing, indulging, and both, so something right's being done here, although piped music verging on the intrusive and muted live sport are potential negatives.

Highly recommended.
The food the beer & the atmosphere were excellent. All the staff were courteous and it made a very pleasant change to be able to have your meal and then have coffee whilst relaxing in good quality leather chairs/sofas afterwards made the whole experience worth repeating.
