Pub well described in the previos review , not much has changed , 4 beers from the Marstons range , my Boondoggle was fine , very busy on a Thursday evening , mainly the younger well to do crowd , with service a little slow mainly to most people paying by card , even if just for a pint !
A lot friendlier than the nearby Spectre and Old Restoration

According to posters behind the bar The Swan was the local CAMRA branch pub of the year between 2005 and 2007. Must have been thin times for local CAMRA members back in the day then, as although the bar supports five hand pumps , the available ales of Hobgoblin, Ringwood Boondoggle and Best, Brakspears Oxford Gold and Jennings Cumberland Ale isn’t the most adventurous choice for a Town centre pub. And as these are the same beers as shown on the pubs website, they would appear to be permanent offerings.
However that aside the Swan was a very pleasant pub for my visit.
It doesn’t look much from the outside, sandwiched between residential shops in the East end of the non-pedestrianized section of the high street. But inside it’s a long thin pub that stretched back inside through several distinct areas to a large glass ceilinged conservatory type section and outside garden area that can also be reached by a courtyard entrance at the front.
It’s a bit of a modern décor internally but had a bit more character for me than some of the other nearby options, especially as there are the several different distinct areas, with a mixture of Chesterfield sofas in one, plainer wooden tables and chairs in another and then plenty of bench seating in the brick walled garden area.
My pint of Cumberland Ale was perfectly OK and I have to say I felt a lot more comfortable here than in the nearby Spectre, Vine and Strand for example.
