A long overdue visit to this multi-award winning pub located in a small hamlet just outside Berkeley. It’s an attractive spot in a rural setting, with a pleasant garden at the front and a car park to the side.

Entering from the side you come in to a small vestibule with the Castle Bar to the left and the Lounge to the right. The lounge itself is quite a small room with slate tiles on the floor, church style pews with fitted cushions for seating and an attractive wooden bar counter with a couple of padded stools at either end. A few Camra publications were on the window sill and menus on the tables, although this is not a food led pub by any means with a selection of pies seeming to be the preferred option of most punters (although they did at one time offer homegrown ham, egg & chips from their own pigs, chickens and potatoes). A dual aspect stone fireplace had a wood burning stove blazing away which was a nice touch and to the right of this an open doorway led to another small room with blue patterned carpet on the floor and a selection if old black and white photos of the locale on the walls as well as a few old brewery mirrors. The Castle Bar at the rear was similar in terms of décor and this in turn led to the skittle alley which has now had a projector screen and sound system set up and is used for occasional cinema nights. If I’m honest, the screen looked rather small and rather wonky and the hard bench seating not the most relaxed movie going experience, but I’m sure it’s a very convivial atmosphere.

Beers on tap were predominantly from their own on-site brewery Tilley’s with Special Bitter, Oatmeal Stout and Waiti Pale, the latter of which was recommended by a friendly punter and went down very well. The guest option was Burning Sky Plateau. Ciders meanwhile were well represented with Tom Oliver’s Perry, Greg's Pit Blend, Sally Cider and Wild Cider’s Tyndale Gold. All in all a great pub with a friendly barmaid and well worth checking out.

A truly great pub in a very nice village. Two bars selling a very good range of real ales and cider. The cider along with the ham, egg and chips were in tip top condition. Skittle alley at the side.

A 120 mile round trip to complete a walk and check out the Camra pub of the year - 2014. A country gem, with 5 real ales and 8 ciders. Clientele and Staff that engage you in conversation and a lovely log burner to warm you up.

Worth checking out. Some photos at my walking blog - http://mappiman.blogspot.co.uk/2016/01/160116-camra-national-pub-of-year.html
