This pub was the only one in my tour of Marple and environs where I did not receive a warm welcome, and this was probably because the licensee was enforcing a totally unnecessary "table service only" policy. Luckily I was allowed to use the toilet facilities before finding a table, and this gave me a chance to check out the pump clips on my way back. Perhaps four Robinsons beers (see photo) were one or two too many for the trade they're doing, and certainly it was an error on my part to go for the Mr Scrooge winter ale, as it was clearly getting a bit long in the tooth; but then it was more than a week after Twelfth Night. This was a pity, as in other circumstances this could have been a pleasant pub, and certainly the two businessmen who were having a late lunch in the same smallish room were enjoying their food and their Guinness. On another day I might have given a rating more in line with the two previous reviews (see below).

A pleasant enough Robbies pub, right on the canal next to Marple Top Lock, which probably explains why BF has been here. There's the main bar area as you enter with rooms to left and right, called Waterways and Sportsmen. Very busy with the post work crowd on my Friday early evening visit, with loads of blockers around the bar, but they were happy enough to move over when requested. There's quite a few horse brasses and other assorted stuff on the window ledges and walls, but it's a bit nondescript after The Hatters Arms which I'd been to just before this one. Only one huge TV screen as far as I could see. 4 handpumps on the bar serving the usual Robbies suspects, but with Robinsons Cascade as the seasonal which wasn't bad for a Robbies beer, even though, as usual for a Robbies single hop beer, there wasn't much Cascade taste to it.

A Robinson's tied house with some attractive original features,it sits above the Macclesfield Canal with the garden offering glimpses of boating action. At the front of the interior are two snugs, one marked Sportsmen with various trophies, the other called Waterways focussed on the canal. The bar is beyond and is semi circular clad in wood ,while opposite is a seating area with a log burner and lots of copper vessels, pans, horse brasses and other traditional nic nacs.Beyond this is more seating,an upright piano and a door to the beer garden ,where brass bands play during summer Sundays. It has the feel of a very traditional community local, with regulars on the bar stools surrounding the bar,and the food looked wholesome and home cooked. There are meal deals every night,I expect pie night to be especially popular.
At the bar there were 4 Robbies beers on my trip ,Trooper,Dizzy Blonde,Cambrian Way and a decent Unicorn.Well worth a visit, especially if you like traditional pub interiors and a friendly welcome from staff and regulars alike.
