Two room Youngs pub with a sense of faded grandeur but at least not wrecked by the refurb mob. On the right is the lounge - burgundy and purple walls all round with a dark wood bar and some mirrors with dead twig surrounds. Upright piano spotted here. This side leads off to a modern patio garden. There’s a through join at the rear of the centrally-located bar, housing a pool table and ultimately leading to the public bar area, a more sparse room showing the FA Cup final on my visit. Dog friendly. Three pumps with two (only two on a Saturday?) on; Youngs Bitter (good) and Special. Rather got the feeling that this was a great pub 15 years ago but it now feels like a bit of an also-ran (the fate of numerous other Youngs houses in the last few years). Could be better.

Well the refurbishment is complete and I'm pleased to report that this remains a traditional proper pub, although there are a few modern twists. The pub retains a two room format, served by the central bar, the lounge bar is comfortable, carpeted with a slightly raised area to one side, then narrowing towards the rear where there is access to the beer garden. Separately accessed but there is an internal connecting door. Mostly traditional seating but with the odd high table, a few fancy lampshades with a retro 60's feel, old local prints on the walls, a map of the area, flowers in small vases.
The public bar has the TV, and also pool, darts and a rarely seen these days pinball table. The mirrors in here have not exactly twigs, more branches wrapped around them!
It's a Young's pub, so there was Ordinary Bitter and Special plus Sharp's Doom Bar, and also St Austell Tribute. The very friendly barmaid was helpful in advising us that the Tribute was also available as the pump was out of sight in the other room. A good honest local pub worthy of a visit and a good double header with the nearby Mason's Arms.

This is a Young’s pub, which had on Bitter (£3.20 a pint) and Special. The Bitter was very well kept and one of the most enjoyable pints of this ale that I have for some while. But it was the first pint of the evening, which is often (for me anyway) the most enjoyable.
This pub is currently undergoing a major refurbishment. The room on the left is closed at present, and the other room that remains open (for now at least) shows signs of a lot of work in progress. They are apparently going to extend this room to the back. The landlady had a chat with us and showed commendable enthusiasm when explaining what was planned. It will probably need a further visit when the work is completed to get a true feel of this pub.
