I've often been to this small town, but always for the purpose of going to the Manor Arms for a beer or two. On this occasion I made enough time for visits to the other two pubs as well. (See my review of the Old Kings Head for what happened there.)

The Black Cock is an ancient, multi-roomed pub with low ceilings. The bar is in a small room to the rear, with a small hatch facing the front rooms, which appear to have been opened out a little, though not so much as to make you expect a pool table or live football on TV - it's not that sort of pub.

There are five hand pumps on the bar, with three beers all brewed locally: the strangely named Utown Pop Shuvit, and two from Lakeland Brewhouse. The woman who served me told me something about the brew; Utown Beer is a subsidiary of Lakeland Brewhouse, with the beers mostly canned (some on sale in a cabinet opposite the bar) and with names associated with skateboarding; the main brewery is based on the former Skinners of Ulverston, which was rescued on the point of failing when the owner of Lakeland Inns (this place, the Sun in Ulverston and the Commodore in Grange over Sands, among others) stepped in, guaranteeing a market for the beers. I went for the Brewhouse Gold, which was in good condition.

I quite liked it here. In any small town like this, having three pubs is extraordinary. That one of them has superlative beers generally means that the others are not quite so good, but where the Kings Head appears to have over-reached (with six beers, all of them gone off), the Black Cock is aiming for a slightly different market to the excellent Manor Arms, with a more modest beer offering plus accommodation, food and a beer garden.

Our rooms for the night on the Inn Way to the Lake District.

Oozes history and very nicely quality. Even if the door didnt fit in the frame of our on suite :-)

Lots of different rooms and somehow, they managed to squeeze a live band into the main bar area on a Sat Night. I won't forget the Sad Eyed Puffins and their protest song about Pylons.

Beerwise, it was an average Moorhouse Pendle Witches Brew followed by a much improved TT Landlord.

Great community pub.

Well, if you are up this way then Broughton-in-Furness is a really good place to stay. The Black Cock is just how you would expect an old Inn to be with oak beamed ceilings and open fires. The food is very good as is the accommodation and there are 5 real ales of which 3 are guests and rotate. The staff are all very helpful and the locals are very friendly, what else could you need?
