It is often said that France is the gastronomique capital of Europe and perhaps I should know as I have lived there a number of years and its true I have eaten well, however there is nothing to beat the good old british pub. I discovered The Crown whilst visiting relatives and feel I must mention this quintessential gem of a pub.

The charming and personable landlord,Phil, explained that the pub had recently re-opened, this was not evident as the staff were courteous ans slick in their service and attention. The atmosphere was convivial and welcoming.

The menu; whilst appearing typically "English Pub Grub" had some interesting nuances and I was assured that all dishes on the menu were created by the Chef, Dirk, and not bought in as one finds so often these days. "Hats Off" to you Dirk, the meal was a gastonomic delight to rival anything served in a top retaurant. The starter of Baked Goats Cheese with Carmalised Onion Marmalade was delicious, a perfect cheese, baked to perfection with the superb marmalade perfectly balanced in flavour so as to cut through any richness. Chicken Kiev, a risky choice as we have all had experiences with the frozen variety!! My Kiev, evident from its form was clearly home-made; succulent chicken oozing garlic butter, the perfect amount of garlic to compliment the velvety butter centre and a melt in the mouth coating, heaven to the tastebuds, seasonal vegetables cooked to perfection, washed down with a fine bottle of New Word Pinotage, reccomended by the patron, that guy knows his wines!!

Thinking that I couldn't manage a desert I was tempted to try the Elderberry Tart as it is not something that one would normally expect in a pub and I was not disappionted, the chef deserves a Michelin Star for that one!!
, from its melt in the mouth pastry to rival any french patissier to its tangy yet sweet filling....simply sublime.Coffee with hand-made chocolates, again from the Chef's skilled hands, finished off what can only be described as the best meal I have had for a long time in any country.

Thank-you to all at The Crown, I will definately be returning...SOON
