World Cup revisit, as we wanted to catch the Brazil v Chile match in a pub with decent ales and no idiots. Four ales on Saturday, a good mix of breweries though style-wise they were pretty much old-school brown bitters, something a little golden or dark would have been a bonus. Good quality all-round and my Cheddar Gorge Best went down nicely. Brilliant TV for the footy, picture as crisp as you’d see anywhere. I do like this place and it’s probably the best bet in the local area.

The ‘other’ village pub. Less chocolate box than the Royal Oak, this one advertises itself as a free house (the Wadworth-esque sign giving a clue as to the former ownership). Two rooms within, modernized. A restaurant room to the left, with the bar and boozing to the right. This room had pool, darts and a pub golfing soc honour board. TV was showing footy to a keen audience. Laid back atmosphere, mainly middle aged punters. Impressive-looking rear garden. Four ales, Flack Manor Double Drop (good shape), Gales HSB, Stonehenge Sign of Spring and Andwell Resolute. Pork scratchings and pork crunch available amongst the bar snacks, which always gets my vote. Quite keen on this one as an all-rounder, would be happy to return. Rated 7
