The Crown Pub in Shenley Road in Borehamwood is now free to be developed by owners Woodhall LLP after Hertsmere Borough Council decided it did not meet the legal requirements as an asset to the community.

Closed and boarded up with security company signage. Owned by Juniper Inns but no indication as to what they might do with it. Fear it may be ripe for residential development. Don't see who would want to live in this town but it is right opposite the station.

The Crown is one of those pubs that has a history of being relaunched every 6 months under a new name. Formerly the Enigma, the Pit, the Rhythm Rooms and probably a few others, it has now gone back to its original name and is currently part of the Smith & Jones chain.

Located on the crossroads just outside the station, it is probably the first port of call for anyone stupid enough to want to do a local pub crawl and, alarmingly, you will probably find that this is one of the better stops.

The interior is quite open with a few pillars and wall remnants doing little to break up its cavernous feel. The furnishings are modern with loud carpets and a mix of hard and soft seating. The décor is fairly plan with a few posters, potted plants, photos and bits of modern artwork but nothing to particularly admire. There are multiple screens aimed at the sports audience and a table top poker machine. At the rear is a spacious section housing 2 pool tables and a dart board

The food and drink is cheap and cheerful with 2 ales available (Bombardier and Youngs Special) plus Westons Traditional scrumpy. The Special was good value at just £2.30 and surprisingly decent quality. The bargain basement food consisted of several standard dishes between £4-£6 and the most expensive item, a 16oz mixed grill, came in at under a tenner. There are also various special deals and curry nights.

My latest early evening visit found a kids party in ful flow and a reasonable mix of cutomers and there is some attempt to keep the place relatively idiot free with a token dress code that includes no football shirts.

Overall the place is pretty charmless but functional and there is no real reason to pay a visit unless you have half an hour to wait for a train.
