Very friendly and picturesque 15th-century pub just off the A259, south-west of Brookland, on Walland Marsh. Features separate bar and restaurant (with a little snug in the connecting corridor) and a substantial grassed beer garden. Woolpack. As a Shepherd Neame house, it was a bit disappointing to find just Spitfire (£4.45) from one of the three handpumps on this first revisit for over 12 years.

We rather liked the look of this one as we drove back from Rye to Newchurch one afternoon during our stay in Romney Marsh, but a queue had formed at 5:45pm for 6pm opening, so we decided to try again later. Next evening at 7:15 we were able to walk in and find a table with no trouble. Service was friendly and efficient, beer was in decent nick and our meals were well cooked and arrived within a pretty short time. We were able to study our surroundings and appreciate the way the original building has been extended at various periods. Apparently it dates from 1410, and includes original wattle and daub. Two of the three beers were Shepherd Neame, so we went for the Whitstable Bay Pale, which would not normally have been my beer of choice, but it went down a treat anyway.

This is 15th Century country pub in essence. Bits of it aren't 15th Century of course, like the addition of the extension holding the inside toilets of course, but it's definitely an archetypal country pub. Here you have the rough cast walls, low ceilings and archways, and black posts and beams all over the place. There are nooks and crannies of course. At the side there's a large garden, separated by an enormous hedge down the middle, but with a shaped archway in it to enable movement between the two sides. Being a country pub, there's a car park on the other side to the garden.

It's a Shepherd Neame house, so there are no surprises with the ales on - Master Brew, Spitfire Gold, and Late Red. We didn't eat here but noticed a board advertising specials - Chicken & ham pie with veg (£8.95); Fisherman's pie (£9.95); and roast pork (£9.25). Sounded like wholesome fare to me.

This is delightful pub. It's certainly worth the detour from the main road to visit this one if you're in the area. A lot of other people obviously agree, as it was doing a very good trade at Sunday lunchtime.
