The Firebug is a long thin L-shaped pub with a long central bar and a raised seating area, which may double up as a stage, in the central corner. Its mostly standing room so aimed more for the weekend drinker than me on a Wednesday evening, although there was still a good crowd in and the barman that served me was both cool and nice, which is a rare combination in a city pub. I didn’t spot a television, but rock music was coming out of the speakers. Only one of the four hand pumps was in operation drawing Wychwood’s Hobgoblin. Premium keg and Carling were also available. I would have used this pub in my younger days.

Whilst in the Swan & Rushes I showed the barmaid my list of Leicester real ale pubs supplied at the CAMRA beer festival. There's one missing she said, it's called Firebug. A real ale pub that no-one else was going to visit during the PuG crawl? Well OB and I just had to go. We sauntered up there via the Derby & Rutland and who should be sat at the bar in here when we arrived? Yep, the barmaid from the S & R. :-)) This is a music venue and is aimed at the late night crowd, so it was a bit dead at around 4 p.m. It's mainly a big open space aimed at vertical drinking and most of the features have been lost as a result. There is a very long bar full of lager fonts etc, but hidden away a bit at the right hand corner are 4 cask ale handpumps. 3 beers were available, all from the extended Marstons range and my pint of Hobgoblin was in decent condition. It's a reasonable enough pub in a large barn kind of way. I'd be interested to visit later in the evening as I guess it would be very different. Good to see a place like this serving real ale though.

An old pub converted to a music pub by a major stripping out exercise, the decor is pretty plain comprising mainly posters for the live music which is held upstairs I believe. Furnished with traditional pub benches, there are a couple of raised areas and lots of vertical drinking space. There are four handpulls at the far end of the L shaped counter, Marstons products on three of them and not badly kept, there are of course the standard UK kegs on four banks of taps. The entrance vestibule is in stained glass and hints that the basic decor was once a bit more interesting.
