Well described by Will, above. Late lunchtime on a wet January Wednesday, trade was mainly of retirement age, enjoying hearty portions of wholesome fare. I was pleased to see Semerwater from Wensleydale, which was on good form. Well worth a punt if you find yourself in this part of the Dale.

Will Larter left this review about The Bolton Arms

This is a well run and unpretentious village local, perhaps the best looking building in an underwhelming village. It's a short walk downhill from the terminus of the revived Wensleydale Railway, and half a mile or so from the impressive Bolton Castle, so if either of those take your fancy, this is the place to come for food or drink. I was there one Saturday lunchtime, just for a quick beer before setting off over the moor to Swaledale, but most people were tucking into what seemed to be fairly sizeable meals. Judging by the phone calls I couldn't help overhearing, the place was fully booked for diners that evening.

There are four hand pumps on the bar: Black Sheep, Thwaites and Theakstons bitters plus an unusual one called Katzenjammer (German for hangover) from Wall's Brewery in Northallerton. This was a reddish coloured malty brew, not unlike Cameron's Strongarm, and made a pleasant change from the "usual suspects" on the bar. The couple that run the pub seem very friendly and there was a good atmosphere about the place. Not to be missed if you're in the area.
