The Ship sits in the corner of an open square of I guess former fishermen’s cottages, the open side is the beach. It has restricted opening hours and no visitors’ cars are allowed into the village, there is however a great view of Dunstanburgh Castle as you walk down the hill from the car park. Inside there are two rooms, probably two cottages at one time, the counter and seating is to the right and a plain sitting room to the left. It’s mainly equipped with bench seating, un-upholstered but with thick seat cushions, scrubbed pine tables throughout with the benches and dining chairs. There are six pulls but only three working on my visit, all with beers from the on-site brewery, a couple of small T-bars cater to more modern tastes. Their beers are perhaps an acquired taste. Exposed stonework and bare boards give an old feel, the odd photo or chart adorns the walls. It’s a don’t miss pub, very reminiscent of the Square and Compass at Worth Matravers, Dorset, in remoteness and atmosphere but not quite as good.

Tucked away in what would be an idyllic location were it not for the holidaymakers, this quaint old pub stands in a little group of cottages around a green, overlooking the beach. As mentioned previously, there is no public vehicular access, with a car park 400m away. It consists of a rather basic pair of adjoining rooms, with scrubbed floorboards and a little bar at the end dispensing 4 ales from the tiny brewery next door. And very nice they were too. Worth the effort of getting to if you can avoid the peak holiday time.
