The boat inn is a former Home Brewery pub with a nautical theme, located down a side street not far away from the nearby Johnson Arms. Once inside there is the main bar area with the bar on the left hand side with another room at the back that has been knocked through but still retains a separate feel. The pub is unusually decorated with ship items and quirky nick knacks. It also has hard wood floors and is quite cosy and quirky. On the bar were six real ales, three permanents and three guests. Permanent beers were Harvest pale, Tribute (off on this visit) and their own house ale called Boat Quaffing Ale. Guests were Moorhouses blonde witch, Hobgoblin and Rev James original. All guest beers over 4% are priced at £3.30. I had the tribute which was nicely kept but maybe a little under conditioned as it was a little tame on flavour but still enjoyable. The pub was a little bit empty so not the most atmospheric but it was a Thursday night, on weekends and busier periods I can see this being quite a quirky place. Overall a nice little side street boozer with nice beers and a good rotation, worth a visit.

Update May 2019***
Much busier and lively on a Saturday night. id had a skinful so didn't mind the loud karaoke and flashing lights but wouldn't score highly on a classic pub tickers criteria. unfortunately beer was rancid and I tried a few of my mates too, the pedigree was cloudy, flat and very poor. I went on to Guinness.

This proper traditional pub is well worth a visit. The pub was built in 1832 and has a nautical theme to it. The walls are painted a deep green and displays Navy and seafaring photos. Their piano is played on Sunday nights for a sing a long. Five ales on handpump on our visit, we tried their Boat Inn ale, which was good. They also serve food.

The Boat inn is on a side street and it used to be an Home Ales tied house and it still has the Home Brewery name in stone at the front of the pub.
This is a small one room pub once inside the bar is on the left and there were five real ales on i had a drink of Boat Quaffing ale and the landlady said it was brewed in the West Midlands this was a darkish bitter and 3.5% the other beers were Theakston Black Bull bitter, Old Mill Fall Over, Bombadier and Deuchars IPA.
There were lots of old photos on the walls of navy ships and sailors taken in the 50s these were interesting to look at,the pub was fairly busy on a mid week dinner and i was quite happy having a drink here.
