Upmarket country pub which looked as if it would be packed out when I arrived at lunchtime today to find an extremely full car park, overflowing into a field in the rear.

With kids and dogs running amok in the car park, things didn't look too promising. Ultimately, I ended up having the bar to myself. There were people sat in some of the other dining areas. But it seems that most of the cars belonged to people visiting a large barn adjacent to the car park, which seemed to be geared towards coffees, teas and snacks.

The main building of the pub seems fairly historic. But some of the furnishings don't quite fit with what could be a really characterful pub. Real ales consisted of Rebellion IPA & Loddon Hullabaloo. Although handpulls were in a different room. So, I ordered from a blackboard, not therefore realising that the Loddon Citra Quad was a craft beer. At £3.03 for a half, I savoured it. But it was nothing to write home about and was served far too cold.

A nice enough country pub, albeit a bit too commercialised for my liking.

Re-opened as a freehouse in April 2017 after a few years of closure, this attractively thatch roofed former Brakspear charge is in the sticks between Caversham and Henley and has had a bit of money thrown at the refurb. This has a two-bar layout, with a small room to the right on entrance with minimal décor and small bar which offered three Loddon ales, as you would expect, given the proximity (WhatPub says this room is referred to as 'The Loddon Bar'). The larger room to the left has a slightly larger bar area, with the bar facing the entrance and offering three further ales - an additional Loddon (Ferryman's Gold) and one each from Rebellion (IPA) and West Berks (Good Old Boy). Décor-wise, there's a large fireplace stack to the right of the wood-faced bar, some small tables and chairs opposite, an original flagstone floor (allegedly) which segues into a light wood-boarded area to the left of the room, with two leather sofas at right angles surrounding a coffee table holding magazines such as 'English Garden' and the like in the left-hand corner, and a larger, dining-style table and chairs in the right. A separate restaurant area is located to the left of the bar in what appears to be a new extension. Small chalked boards in and around the bar make suggestions of bar snacks, craft lagers and Bloody Marys as add-ons for you to part with more of your cash. Along with the requisite gravelled car park and 'Champagne Pol Roger' umbrellas out front it's all a little plummy-accented, but in an era of swathing pub closures, this reinvention is to be applauded, especially with their locAle slant.
