This is a rather eccentric pub that appears to focus on food.

We arrived at the bar to find a couple of Hook Norton beers - Hooky & Off The Hook. They no longer stock a real cider. We had plenty of chance to deliberate about what to have as the barman and two waitresses were all making themselves look busy, whilst seemingly ignoring us. Eventually the barmaid our side of the bar asked if we had booked. I don't normally book to visit a pub, as I've generally no idea what time I'm going to get there!

I replied that I hadn't, but that I was happy to just stop for a drink, whilst I would be even happier if they had a table spare to eat. The waitress joyfully informed me that they were fully booked, but would find me a table to have a drink!!

We were led away from the main bar area to a separate dining area that was decorated in a bizarre manner, with plenty of stuffed animals and the like. The animal theme apparently continued in the ladies toilets, where animal noises were being played through a speaker. I normally find similar noises in the gents. So, I set off to explore if that was the case, only to find complete silence.

Despite the strange service, the lack of available tables and the limited drinks range, I quite liked the quirky nature of this pub. I would certainly consider coming back and sampling the interesting menu if I wasn't undertaking a 10-pub crawl and I could pre-determine what time I might arrive.

Much as described by K below, and in a rather bleak situation on the edge of this pretty village. Far too gastro for my taste, I wouldn't linger inside even without Covid - but there are a few picnic sets in the car park. Pleasant enough I suppose despite the beer options being Hooky Gold and an HN seasonal I didn't fancy. I didn't fancy the off-form Gold once I'd got it.

Amongst other laxities, there was no one-way system, no names taken, no staff PPE. Good job we weren't off duty EH officers.

Now under the care of the former team from Ye Olde Reine Deere in Banbury, this is just over the border in Northants and is built from the ubiquitous Hornton stone, so beloved in these parts. And much like the estates in these parts, this is Hook Norton-tied, with four of their ales - Bitter, Old Hooky, Lion and the seasonal Haymaker, with a fifth pump unclipped. It's had a bit of a makeover internally but the high-ceilinged, rectangular room almost divides itself into a rustic side (to the right) and a modern. contemporised side (to the left) either side of the central bar, with a restaurant further on the right side. There's also some nice décor, including a guitar case made into mini shelves.
