This pub apparently dates back to the 18th century, which I can well believe. It’s also a pub which I’ve bombed past by car all my life without visiting, as my grandparents, with whom we stayed every school holiday, lived about three miles from here, the weekly shop conducted in Ludlow; the original name was reinstated in 2021 after a brief spell as the Bakers Arms.
The first thing we noticed on arrival, was not just the substantial car park, but the huge beer garden (with children’s playthings), but also a substantial stage area erected no doubt to celebrate the Queen’s capacity to continue living, whilst being waited on hand and foot; Bruce Springsteen was playing loudly over an external sound system.
The interior is essentially a slightly modernised old pub, generally typical of the type, with some attractive aged wood beams, thankfully not ruined through being painted black, contrasting with white walls. There’s some carpeting and a dining area to the rear right, whilst there’s a darts’ throw to the front right, packed with spectators. The place has minor gastro pretensions, though I doubt it’s as gastro as the Boot over the road, we all opting for a quartet of fish ‘n’ chips, the nipper going for the burger; all were declared good, but could have been improved if the fish had been skinned and the ‘chunky chips’ were actually normal chips, not just lumps of hot potato. Customers were quite mixed, with some very vocal agricultural types, mainly watching the darts or knocking back the ale out in the car park; otherwise, customers were a more genteel bunch, possibly incomers to the area; overall though, there was a good atmosphere.
Ales amounted to two from Hobsons then Butty Back at £4.00 a pint and far too cold, though fine once warmed up, served by a very polite and professional barmaid.
This isn’t a bad pub, being a decent place for a convenient roadside stopover for a beer and good value meal in comfortable surroundings; a better choice of ales served at cellar temperature would get the score up, as would ensuring that whilst dining, we weren't subjected to loud barking from a large, unseen dog.

Just a quick half here as it was opening time as I was passing on my bike. I was expecting a food-oriented country pub, but with six real ales advertised on the bar, this turned out to be a bit of a find. (See photos for details.) An obvious regular turned up a few seconds before me, and went for the John Smiths Smooth crap - he doesn't know what he's missing. The pub was renamed the Bakers Arms because they do also bake bread here. I'd love to come back for a longer session, but this is one of those mysterious pubs in the middle of nowhere: where do all the drinkers come from?
