A wonderfully eccentric village pub in a thatched hamstone house built in stone from the nearby Ham Hill quarry.  The pub is currently owned by Hall and Woodhouse.  There is a small car park at the back, from which the pub is entered via a pleasant paved garden.  The front rooms have been partially opened out to form a series of comfortable bar and dining areas, retaining many original architectural features such as structural timbers, fireplaces, chimney breasts and flagstone floors.  There is an impressive stuffed pike hanging on the wall above a woodburner, and various local artefacts are on display.  There is an unusual stencilled oakleaf pattern on several of the timbers.  A large dormant hound occupied part of the floor – it’s vitality was in question until it farted, an example of flatulence whose stench would, if such things could be quantified, surely be a candidate for a world record.  Main meals were on offer, primarily standard pub grub, well cooked and served with a smile by cheerful, welcoming staff.  An unusual selection of bar snacks was on offer – I tried the deep-fried haloumi with supermarket salsa, but it was rather odd and I didn’t think I’ll try it again.  The ales were excellent – Tanglefoot, Badger Bitter and Fursty Ferret, all in their prime.  I’d be very happy to come back here anytime for food and drink, and given its proximity to the A303, I’d be happy to recommend it as a pitstop.

Nice 'olde worlde' village pub with a reputation for good food. Very warm welcome even though it was very busy. Only one ale on - Badger - well kept, if not my favourite (so lose a million Brownie points!). The food is much better than average (but not outstanding) and extra Brownie points for the menu which is more adventurous than general pub grub fare. The stilton and pear starter could have done with more than a few small crumbs of stilton. The bream was very nice if a tad overcooked, but the accompanying risotto would have been far better cooked with arborio or carnaroli rice rather than quick cook long grain. Nevertheless an overall 7/10 (unlike the unrealistic 10/10 of the previous review - the idiot only ever leaves a 10/10. Doesn't s/he realise that the perfect pub does not and cannot exist!) and we'll probably be back.
