A long established pub on the Old market strip, this has recently been bought by the local Wickwar brewery and has undergone quite an extensive refurbishment. Surprisingly for this part of town there is also a courtyard garden at the rear which I imagine would be a pleasant enough spot in the warmer weather.

Internally it consists of one long and fairly narrow room, with the bar counter about half way up on the left. It has a slightly more contemporary look than I recall from previous visits, with sanded wooden boards covering the floor whilst the walls were a mixture of grey/blue and grey paintwork with dark green paint on some of the timberwork. Numerous mirrors covered the right hand wall, whilst there were a few artistic drawings to the left, including one which looked to be a rather abstract version of some hot air balloons. Chequered tiling was on the back wall which provided something of a contrast and a small TV was showing a sports channel. Fortunately the volume was off so this was not too intrusive.

Beers on tap were Falling Star and Bob from Wickwar along with Goff’s Tournament and Castle’s White Knight. All cask ales were priced at a very reasonable £2.90. Ciders were well represented with Thatcher’s Gold, Stan’s Big Apple and Symonds Founders Reserve. All in all I was quite pleasantly surprised by this, it’s certainly a step or two up from many of the nearby establishments, and I will no doubt return to check out their Sunday Roasts which have gained something of a reputation.

The Punch Bowl is just down from the Old Market Tavern.
Once inside there is a single narrow room which runs to the rear, the floor is bare boarded, the bar is on the left side, the seating is normal tables and chairs.
There was one real ale on the bar which was Doom Bar,this was a decent enough drink.
I was happy enough having a drink in this pub.

The Punchbowl has an attractive exterior with some well preserved tiling and the pub name boldly presented high on the front wall. Inside it is all a bit more basic, a long and narrow bare boarded room with the bar along one side towards the front. A bit of effort has been made to brighten the pub up and add some interest as there are a series of French advertisment posters in frames all around. Seating is of the regular chair and table standard with tables rather crammed together at the rear Wetherspoons style. A big screen at the rear was showing the Italian version of Sky Sports with a live Premier League game on on Saturday afternoon. The clientele were rather lively and blokey but certainly not unfriendly towards the stranger in their midst even if everyone seemed to be acquainted. Three handpumps offered a mainstream choice of Doom Bar, Bombardier and Young's London Gold, the latter good value at £2.50. The food is cheap too although not having sampled I can't really vouch for it, ham, egg and chips £4.50, chilli and chips £4.50, curry of the day £5.
A ska/reggae/northern soul night was advertised with some DJ or other.
A basic down to earth boozer offering food and drink at attractive prices, worth popping in for a pint or two.
