This is a Hall & Woodhouse pub, which had on just a couple of their ales – Tanglefoot and Badger Bitter. I quite like Badger Bitter and my pint was in good nick, and at the wallet friendly price of £2.80 a pint. I’m not sure whether they do food during the week, but I didn’t see any menus when I was in here on Wednesday afternoon.
This pub is much larger than it looks when approaching it down the high st from the Ewell West end. It’s clearly been extending into an adjoining cottage at some stage, and is a bit of a rabbit warren of inter-connected drinking areas. One room contains a bar counter; another a couple of sofas; another some normal tables and chairs; another a second bar counter and a stage where they presumably have live music; and yet another a pool table and dartboard. The ceiling is very low, necessitating “mind your head” signs at strategic locations, with ancient looking dark beams here and there. I think that this is a genuinely old building.
It was desperately quiet when I was in, with just a couple of punters other than me in there. I hope it does more trade in the evenings or at weekends. Ewell Village is fortunate in that it still has the same complement of pubs that it had 20 years ago, although a couple have changed their character significantly. I quite like this pub and hope it survives, as to me it’s one of the better ones in the Village. But then I do like H&W ales.

This is a large pub with several interconnecting areas. The pub looks to have been formed from three or even four cottages. The front area has a couple of carpeted rooms with wood panelling and a fireplace. Low beamed ceiling with advice to "Mind Your Head". The bar is towards the middle of the pub in its own area. Beyond here is another long room with a stage, live music, comedy and open mic nights are held here. This area and the bar are wooden floored. The end room has a pool table, dartboard and a fruit machine and is marked as the "Westpark FC Lounge".
The pub has mixed seating from upholstered bench type seats ranging to a number of rather shabby and grubby white leatherette sofas.
Hall and Woodhouse beers, four pumps two each of Badger and Tanglefoot. The Badger was ok and decent value at £2.75. There were menus and condiments on the tables, candles too, but no one seemed to be eating and the pub was very quiet mid-afternoon.
Very little in the way of decor, just a couple of rather forlorn looking framed pictures, a few band flyers and the occasional quotation printed on the walls.
Background jazz was playing but this was totally drowned out by some loud overbearing nature programme coming from a TV behind the bar. I found the pub to be a little strange and rather dated, certainly in need of some care and attention. It is probably a totally different place of an evening with a band playing.
