A busy and quite large roadside pub which has had several incarnations in the past but is now comfortably settled as an Ember Inn, with a Premier inn behind occupying what was once a large garden. The interior is in fairly standard Ember Inn modern style, although perhaps retaining more traces of the old pub than some do. Usual mixture of dining tables and high tables with stools, with a few useful corners to lurk in. One area to the side is labelled 'family dining' but it is all much of a muchness. There are some tables out the front by the road, and a quieter patio area to the back. Draught ales include regularly changing guests alongside London Pride, Doom Bar and the house beer. Food not sampled but the Ember Inn menu is usually quite reliable. All in all quite pleasant, without being exceptional.

Acquired by M&B and refurbished into their mid-market Ember Inns format.

Jan 2013

It's changed a little bit since Rex called. The "wait to be seated" sign remains but it's a Thai restaurant now, part of a chain of such 'Tosspot and Dragon' establishments. The front restaurant bit looks quite nice, done out in usual UK Thai restaurant fashion, all heavy dark wood and carved elephants: there must be a big warehouse called Thaikea where they get this stuff. There's an autorickshaw parked outside, which is a nice touch. It was deserted at 7PM on a Tuesday evening.

Proceeding past the unwelcoming sign you get to the bar which is fairly routine pubco by numbers. It was populated by about a dozen white van types who, judging by the logos on the vehicles outside, were billetted in the Premier Inn out the back and were intent on making a fair impression on the pub's Wifebeater supplies before the night was out. Squeezing to the bar through this lot wasn't easy, but once there there's a solitary Pride pump dispensing half reasonable beer, and, unusually for a pub, draught Cobra, though as I say most punters were on Wifebeater or Guinness. Service was without a smile, I think the clienteles' witty banter had long ceased to cut any ice with the solitary barmaid.

This is a thirties roadhouse along what is now a bleak stretch of busy suburban dual-carriagway, scratching a living along with tatty rows of takeaways and Londises and bookies. There's no real reason to visit unless you live locally or your company is cruel enough to book you into the Premier Inn.

Three points because the Pride was alright.

This is now essentially a carvery restaurant, apparently with a bar as a bit of a sideline. As you enter you are confronted by the “wait to be seated” sign. Ignoring this irrelevance, I headed for the bar area on the left, which turns out to be deserted – no customers and no bar staff. Having the place to myself, I had a good look round, although there really wasn’t much to see, just the usual sort of tables and chairs that you see in this type of quasi restaurant. The dining area was to the right and only had a couple of customers finishing a late lunch; and there is a garden/courtyard area to the left of the pub through an archway from the road. There’s a Premier Travel Inn next to the pub, from which I suppose it gets some of its custom. On the bar counter there were two handpumps, advertising Young’s Bitter and Bombardier, but I didn’t get to sample either of them because by this time I had seen all I needed to see, and in the continuing absence of any bar staff, I left.
