Large pub om road junction, mainly aimed at family dining during the day and locals drinking in the evenings. Reasonably tidy bright and modern interior, with numerous different areas all interconnecting. Three ales on offer of the Doom Bar/London Pride variety and condition reasonable - even has a Cask Marque listing. Nothing much wrong with it, for what it is.

This is a member of the Sizzling pubco chain so obviously it does the usual bogstandard pub grub advertised in glossy menus on all the tables. Inside there’s the usual mix of bucket armchairs, sofas and normal tables and chairs. Games machines, fruit machines and the inevitable pool table are all here. With a predictable inevitability, the only ale on was London Pride (£2.80 a pint) which was just about OK and thus a notch or two better than at the William Bourne down the road.
I reckon that overall this pub is a better bet than the William Bourne, but that’s not saying much, and is probably because we didn’t seem to have the same sort of coarse and vulgar customers in here. This is a bogstandard cheap and cheerful pubco chain pub in the ale and pub wasteland of Chessington. This is another pub to which I probably won’t return.

Originally called the Blackamoors Head, the pub was probably long overdue a major change, partly to appease the modern era PC brigade regarding the derogatory pub name and also to shake off what was at best a somewhat dubious reputation, hence the pub was completely refurbished in 2006 and given its new identity.

The modern interior is quite sprawling with a central bar surrounded by several screened off sections and, at the rear, an unobtrusive Pool/Darts/TV section. In what is certainly a first on my extensive pub travels, an amusement arcade crane grab machine was also part of the in-house enteranment. There is also plenty of outside seating. It looks clean and tidy enough and in its own way, quite stylish although pub traditionalists will find the place rather contrived.

The pub is now part of the Sizzling Pub chain and is very much geared towards the lower end of the market. Visualise a cross between Wetherspoons and a Hungry Horse and you pretty much get the idea with cheap food and drink prices that are tailor made for obese binge drinkers. Bottles of wine start at £5.49 and there is the now ubiquitous run of beer and meal evenings (Mon Burgers £4.99, Tue Curry £5.99, Wed Grill £5.99 and Thu Mexican £6.49). The 4 hand pumps offered 2 ales - London Pride and Marstons EPA which at £1.50 for the latter was probably the best beer bargain in town price wise.

The place was quite bustling for my early evening midweek visit which is probably more down to the pricing aimed at a certain demographic than the pub actually being particularly good. The place is fine for a quick pit stop if you miss the half hourly train but it isn’t the sort of place where you would want to meet your future partner
