10th July 2011
A solid flint knapped and tile hung pub in a quiet village close to the Goodwood Estate-I think I saw a grandstand looming through some trees.Inside, a dining room to the left, two little bars and a public towards the rear. On a previous visit, it was so full we had to eat in the inglenook fireplace, but quieter on this visit. Good flagstones on the floor, low ceilings. As it was July, we sat out in the appletree furnished back garden-there’s also a sun trap with benches at the front.
We hadn’t planned to eat, but hunger pangs directed us to the starters boards, salads being the order of the day. Quite pricey, but even the smaller options were quite filling.
On the beer front, there were handpumps serving Ballard’s Best Bitter, Otter Amber and Ale, together with a house beer-Fox Goes Free Best Bitter, brewed by Arundel .Addleston’s cider was also on handpump. The Ballard’s was tasty, but not in tiptop condition. Otter Amber was most interesting, a spicy, almost seaweedy beer, which I would like to try again. I found the house beer very approachable, and a good example of a brown but not boring best bitter. I’ve heard good reports of Arundel beers.
We are very fond of this pub: a friendly welcome, efficient staff, clean and tidy with good beer. Not sure if it is dog friendly.
Update 4th September 2021:A return visit ten years later found the pub much the same, though thankfully maintaining some level of Covid precautions. The beer range included Fox Goes Free from Arundel, alongside Arundel's Sussex Gold, together with Catcher from Flack Manor, which seemed the tastiest of a rather similar bunch.
Very much food led, there were a few drinkers early on a sunny September Saturday evening. Filling up quickly, we sat in the pleasant garden, as the tables inside seemed too close for comfort and safety.Dog friendly.
